Frances Tiafoe had a disappointing finish at Roland Garros but he bounced back in strong fashion at the
Stuttgart Open beating Jiri Lehecka in two sets 7-6(2) 6-4.
Tiafoe has made it no secret that he's playing for the grand slam trophy and the American has certainly looked more serious about it this year. There are still those playful moments from him on the court but for the most part, he's very serious about his tennis and the way he approach matches.
It's why his ranking has improved with a trophy in the bag this year as well. Grass is a surface where he could certainly do some damage with the way he plays the style. It's a surface you can actually outsmart your opponent and Tiafoe loves to play those small games on the court. His win over Lehecka in Stuttgart wasn't a perfect start but he did enough.
He's shown the ability to pick and choose his spots a little bit and that's a very good skill to have at a best-of-five event. Wimbledon is not a likely target for him but US Open is. Any boost to his ranking along the way would help him in that regard so he is certainly targeting a good grass season.
When it comes to the match it was a rather simple affair. The first set saw both of them dominate on the serve as we only saw one break point which Tiafoe saved. The tiebreak was played a bit better by the American who ended up getting it done 7-2. The second set was a bit easier as the American managed to break Lehecka this time around and the close it out with 6-4. The final game was a bit rocky with a couple of deuces and break points but he got it done.
