American tennis star Frances Tiafoe experienced a breakthrough season in 2022, culminating with an astounding run to the semifinals of the US Open.
Tiafoe, nicknamed Big Foe, defeated Rafael Nadal en route to the the semifinals, becoming the first Black American man to do so since Arthur Ashe half a century ago. In that round, he fell to the eventual champion, Carlos Alcaraz, in a five-set match that went on well past midnight. At the Laver Cup in London shortly thereafter, Tiafoe would help Team World clench victory for the very first time.
Nonetheless, the 24-year old remains hungry for more success. In a recent interview with Vogue, Tiafoe admitted he wants to reach—and stay at—the top, especially with the expectations that have been brewing since he won his first and only tour title, the Delray Beach Open, in 2018.
“In 2023, the goal is to win a Slam. And to be honest with you,” he says, “I really want to win a title. I haven’t since I was 20. It’s been a while. I’ve gotten to finals, but I haven’t finished the job on Sunday.”
The Maryland native seems primed and ready to add to his legacy. His slam era, to be more precise.
“I want to be peaking physically, mentally, and emotionally, game-wise, going into the Slams in 2023. That might mean playing a bit less in between, to be fully focused,” Tiafoe says. “I like playing in the big moments. I don’t run away from those. I go to them. But it’s time to fully do the job.”
