Taylor Fritz was facing Felix Auger-Aliassime who like himself has had the breakout year of his career albeit at different ends of the tennis year with the Canadian coming into his own as of late.
But he won't add the ATP Finals to his title haul this week as Fritz took him down in a winner takes all clash on Thursday evening in Turin and reaches the semi-finals on debut 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-2.
A close tie over the first two sets, Fritz pulled away in the decider to seal his spot and was strong on serve throughout producing 88 per cent (50/57) of his first-service points and saved all three break points he faced sealing victory on his first match point.
In addition, he extends his head to head to 2-0 against Auger-Aliassime and will face Novak Djokovic next on Saturday while Casper Ruud faces Stefanos Tsitsipas or Andrey Rublev.
