America’s tennis star
Frances Tiafoe has hailed the decision
to add video replay option for the
US Open 2024. The fourth and final Grand
Slam of the year will begin from will begin from August 26 where players from
all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the
ultimate prize.
Tiafoe, who is also set to take part in the competition, was
recently quoted in a report where he hailed the decision to allow video replay
to make a correct call during the match. "Yeah, very happy to have that.
Very happy to have that,” he said. "I think it's very, very big. There's a lot on
the line that you're playing for. You know, I mean, some things that happened
last week, I feel like this can't happen at an elite level. We're talking about
top of the game, our biggest events outside of slams. I think it's a really,
really good thing. You know, technology is so good now, I think it should be
covered in that way for sure.”
The decision was taken after the recent controversy in the
Cincinnati Open between Britain’s Jack Draper and Canada’s Felix Auger
Aliassime in the round of 16. In that contest, on match point, it became clear on a replay that the ball bounced twice before Draper played the return shot, but the umpire failed to recognise it and refused to change the decision after watching the video replay as it was not allowed in the competition’s rules.
That incident was heavily criticised by former and current players, who expressed their views through different medians. Tiafoe is
now set to take part in the US Open, where he will face fellow American Aleksandar
Kovacevic in the opening round. It will be the second meeting between the two
players in professional tennis. In the previous meeting, which was during the
third round of the CITI Open earlier this year, it was Tiafoe who came out on top
with a score of 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3.
