FRANCES TIAFOE HAS DONE IT
Frances Tiafoe played a superb match to take down a solid but not great Rafael Nadal at the US Open in New York 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3.
The American player was always going to show up for this match as he generally does really well when playing in front of engaged crowds. The New York one is certainly like that and he thrived in the atmosphere. Both players played well in the opening set but Tiafoe was amazing. He did not allow a single break point in the set that he won 6-4.
He risked a bit more and hit more winners which were key. The 2nd set was quite similar as both player held their serve rather comfortable early on but this around it was Nadal who did not allow a single break point as Tiafoe dropped his serve at 4-5 to lose the set.
The 3rd set featured strong play by both once again as we saw a similar scritp. Early on, nobody allowed break points and games were won rather comfortably. Midway through the set, Tiafoe upped his game suddenly catching Nadal off guard and taking the break. He finished it off 6-4.
The final set is one where Nadal started slipping away physically and not being able to keep up with Tiafoe. Despite that, some poor choices by the American gave Nadal a break as he took a 3-1 lead. He would not hold it as Tiafoe became more serious winning four games in a row and taking the 5-3 lead. He then closed it out with another break 6-3.
