A top 10 seed is out on day one and it's
Stefanos Tsitsipas who lost to
Frances Tiafoe 4-6 4-6 3-6.
Many wondered how Stefanos Tsitsipas would respond after his devastating Roland Garros finals loss and he did not respond well. The Greek was positive on Media day but he ran into a mine on Monday. Frances Tiafoe is a tricky grass-court player and he enjoys playing on any surface that works well with his powerful serve.
Tiafoe broke Tsitsipas in the first game and that proved crucial as the American allowed only one break point in the first set and saved it. He served better and had more winners which proved enough for the 6-4 1st set win. Tsitsipas struggled to return serves all day long especially from his backhand.
It's a glaring weakness in his game and Tiafoe attacked it at any opportunity. The tactic worked in the 2nd set as well as the American broke the Greek once more. It came late in the set at 4-4 but Stefanos had break points in the next game. Once again he failed to use them and Tiafoe went 2-0 up.
Frustrations mounted for Tsitsipas who lost his serve once more in the first game on the 3rd set and while he had chances later in the set Tiafoe proved too solid overall. The American completed a huge upset win that is shocking when looked out of context but not so much considering all the narratives ahead of the match.
