Fritz put on a serving clinic in his 6-4 6-3 victory over the World No.94, hitting 11 aces while winning 80% of points behind his first serve. Neither man was able to gain much ground in the first set, till Fritz applied enough pressure to his opponent's serve. The sole break was enough to give the American the opening set, although he had to save two break points of his own.
Despite dropping the opener, Gomez came out energized in the second set. The Ecuadorian obtained an early break to lead 3-1, but was unable to take advantage of his opportunity. Fritz rallied back, winning five games in a row as he closed out the match after an hour and 27 minutes.
The World No.7 will face Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals, with the French veteran upsetting ninth seed J.J Wolf in their round of 16 encounter earlier in the day.
