Taylor Fritz overcame a challenging encounter against Czech
opponent Jiri Lehecka. After an early exit in the round of 16 at the Canadian
Open against Alex de Minaur, currently ranked world No. 9, Fritz returned to
his home country for his final tournament ahead of the US Open.
In the
first set, a remarkable 30-point tie-break unfolded, lasting one hour and ten
minutes. Fritz secured victory in the tie-break's sixth set-point, after
fending off five. Both athletes struggled with their serves, with 15 out of the
30 points being mini-breaks.
The second
set was a display of absolute dominance by the American, who earned two breaks
to close the match with a score of 7-6(14), 6-2. Former Indin Wells champion now awaits his next
opponent, which will be determined between Italian Lorenzo Sonego and qualifier
Alexander Schevchenko.
In another
captivating match, Alexander Zverev triumphed over Grigor Dimitrov, securing
his spot in the second round. The German needed just one hour and thirteen
minutes to defeat the Bulgarian.
Throughout
both sets, 'Sascha' controlled the game from his service, while his opponent
struggled with inconsistency. Zverev recorded 11 winners and 7 unforced errors,
compared to Dimitrov's 13 winners and 16 unforced errors.
Zverev showcased
effectiveness in crucial moments, converting 4 out of 8 break points in his
favor and saving all three that he conceded to Dimitrov.
The duel
concluded with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory, eliminating Dimitrov from the
tournament, leaving him with the US Open as his sole focus in the upcoming two
weeks.
Former
world No. 2 is set to face Japanese player Yoshito Nishioka in the second
round, who secured victory in two sets against Gregoire Barrere.
