Former World No. 6
Gilles Simon announced on social media Saturday that he will retire at the end of the season.
Simon has had a very long and pretty successful career winning multiple trophies and being ranked inside the top 10. The Frenchman has been part of a very successful generation of tennis players from France that included Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet and himself. They essentially grew up on tour and now two of them will be retired at the end of the year.
Simon announced the decision on social media writing:
“It was a magical, wonderful and extraordinary adventure,” Simon wrote on social media. “It will stop at the end of the year. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who made it possible. There is no sadness, no regret. Just the will to put everything I have left. On every game, until the end.”
The Frenchman made his singles debut on the ATP Tour in Metz in
October 2004 and has since captured 14 tour-level titles. The
37-year-old also reached two ATP Masters 1000 finals in Madrid (2008)
and Shanghai (2014), reaching a career-high No. 6 in the ATP Rankings. Simon is currently on 498 tour-level wins and will be aiming to
become just the 11th active player to reach the 500-victory landmark
between now and the end of the year.
