Leylah
Fernandez leads the Canadian team in the
United Cup and expresses excitement
about facing some of the top 10 female tennis players in the tournament. The
21-year-old, a 2021 US Open finalist, aims to be in peak condition for the
Australian Open in two weeks.
The athlete
formed one of the strongest pairs in the tournament with Felix Auger-Aliassime,
but recently, the former world No. 8 withdrew from the competition before the
first series. As a result, Leylah will now take on the responsibility of
leading the team in pursuit of favorable outcomes.
Facing top-players
Fernandez
previously led the Canadian team to their first Billie Jean King Cup at the end
of 2023, winning several crucial matches in both singles and doubles alongside
Gabriela Dabrowski. This time, the left-handed tennis player appreciates the
opportunity to compete against several of the world's best players at the
beginning of the season, including four in the top 10 and seven in the top 20
currently in the round-robin stage.
“It's
extremely important. We've been training extremely hard in the pre-season. To
be able to get the opportunity to have some match play against top-10 players
in this format, it's going to see where we are with our level, if it's high,
what we need to work on, get ready for the Australian Open,” former world No. 13 said.
United Cup
Debut
Canada
shares Group B with Greece and Chile in Melbourne. Tonight, the world No. 35
Leylah Fernandez will be in the opening match against Chile, taking on the
world No. 668 Daniela Seguel, who holds the lowest ranking among female singles
players who plays as the No. 1 WTA representative for her country.
In the
second match, a substantial ranking difference will once again be evident as
Nicolas Jarry faces Steven Diez, the world No. 314. In the mixed doubles
showdown, Fernandez will partner with Diez to challenge Jarry and Seguel,
although there might be changes up to 20 minutes before the match.
