Angelique Kerber returned to action during the 2024
United Cup to start Italy's tie against Germany in Sydney, but it ended in defeat losing 4-6, 5-7 to
Jasmine Paolini in the opening tie.
Kerber who had been out for a year and a half was never expected to be firing on all cylinders straight away and will take positives from defeat against Paolini who has been ever improving during 2023.
It nearly went more Kerber's way was Paolini cramping in the second set and Kerber helping her out. But in the end, the Italian saved set point and came from 3-5 down to seal the win after taking the opener 6-4.
She closed out with 42 winners in a superb display in one that she will gain confidence from against a former World No.1 and multiple Grand Slam champion on her return especially after facing some adversity.
It will be the only action that Kerber is in today with no mixed doubles picked for her and Zverev despite the want for both to play together at the upcoming Olympic Games. Zverev though plays next when he takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the men's tie aiming to level up before Siegemund and Marterer faces Moratelli and Cobolli in the mixed doubles in what could be a dead rubber in the context of the contest or could be the decider.
But in terms of Kerber, she is back on court and showing good level despite being defeated in her first match back. Positive signs for fans of the German.
