Halep survives a topsy-turvy affair against Schunk at Roland Garros

Simona Halep faced an up and coming talent in Natasja Schunk and while there were some issues she was able to win it in three 6-4 1-6 6-1.

Halep has been playing very good tennis on clay this season but her level has been somewhat up and down. At times she was superb and at times she was quite poor. The same thing happened here with Halep falling behind 0-3 at the start of the match. She need some time to get a good rhythm and once she did she fought all the way back in the opening set.

She was able to save break points at 5-4 to close out the set 6-4. The 2nd set was when she lost her compass a bit. She rushed into rallies and tried to do too much and it did not work. Schunk played a very composed set taking advantage of 13 errors from Halep in 35 minutes to win it 6-1. The final set opened with Halep having to save a couple of break points.

Schunk had two overall but she failed to use either and from there she kind of just fell apart. Halep broke her in the next game to take a 20 lead and it became a 3-0 lead later on. She then added another break to make it 5-0 as the young German sort of gave up. Halep finished it off with 6-4 6-1 in a match that saw her commit 31 errors to only 18 winners.
