Sascha Zverev outlasted Kevin Anderson after a 3 hour battle and 4 sets to book a second round spot at the US Open.

Sascha Zverev outlasted a solid attempt by Kevin Anderson who had chances in this match but in crucial moments the German was simply better. The end result was 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to Zverev and the German was extremely happy with the result:
"I am actually quite happy with a first round like that. Kevin is not someone you usually play in a first round. This is a fourth round, quarter-final, semi-final match normally against him. I am extremely happy to be through."
One thing that Zverev notably used in this match was his volley play which was noticeably improved than before. It allowed him to push Anderson behind the baseline, a part of court which he doesn't enjoy at all. After the match Zverev admitted to working on his volley:
"[My volley] is something that I worked on in these six months. It was my serve, my volleys that I worked on. In the [Western & Southern Open] match, I thought I did those two things well until the really important moments and I wanted to do it differently to finish off the match today."
Zverev moves on to the next round of the US Open after a solid display. He is hoping this event might bring him his first grand slam title, something many think is quite possible.
