"He has a chance" says David Ferrer on Nadal winning the Australian Open

Rafael Nadal only played once in the Australian Open final and it was way back in 2009 defeating Roger Federer in an epic final.

The Australian Open is the grand slam event where Nadal saw the least success but that doesn't mean he can't win it again. That is according to his compatriot David Ferrer who knows Nadal very well from the many years they played together on the Tour and Spanish Davis Cup team. Speaking to Sky Sports he said:

“At the moment, Djokovic is playing well and he is healthy, but I (also) think Rafael Nadal has a chance to win the Australian Open, for sure."

Ferrer admitted it's not likely to happen but he would not rule out Nadal completely as he believes that Nadal is able to sometimes pull out a level nobody expected him to. Nadal himself did not put too much expectation on himself recently speaking at the Abu Dhabi event:

“It’s not about pain. I had pain a lot of times during my career, almost all the time, it’s more about having the chance to have a pain that I can manage to compete well. Let’s see. I need to try it in the competition. I know the comeback will be not easy. I don’t have big expectations now."

He further said:

“I really hope the foot is going to get better and better to be again at the level that I want to be. If I am able to play with no limitations, I want to fight again for everything, so that’s the goal.”
