Former world number one
Lindsay Davenport has backed Serbia’s
legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic to win ‘two’ or ‘three’ Grand Slams next year.
The 37-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history of men’s
tennis in the singles category, having won as many as 24 Grand Slam titles.
Djokovic has gone through a mixed 2024 campaign. The
Belgrade-born star managed to finally achieved something that was missing from
his trophy cabinet as he won an Olympic gold medal for his country in Paris as
he defeated Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final in straight sets with a score
of 7-6, 7-6. However, other than that, the former world number one has not
managed to win a single Grand Slam this season.
It was the first time in seven years that Djokovic failed
to win a single Grand Slam in a season. His most recent appearance was in the
US Open, where he was knocked out after losing in the third round to Australia’s
Alexei Popyrin with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. His best performance in a
Grand Slam this year came at Wimbledon, where he lost in the final to Alcaraz in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
After that result, while talking to the media, the legendary
tennis star admitted that his performance in New York was the ‘worst’ he
produced in a big event in a long time. Former women’s world number one Davenport,
who won three major titles in her career, was recently quoted in a report where
he backed Djokovic to win ‘two’ or ‘three’ Grand Slams in 2025. “We keep
forgetting that Novak is 37 years old, that he has been on tour for 20 years,” she
said. “He knows and feels it best. He needs time to enjoy, celebrate and then
get ready for Australia. I believe that next year he can take two or three
Grand Slams.”
