Former Serena Williams’ coach, Rennae Stubbs, weighed in on Nick Kyrgios’ comments under a post by Cruz Hewitt, where Kyrgios reiterated his criticism of Jannik Sinner. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up took another shot at the Italian just days before the Australian Open.

The 29-year-old player, has spent nearly two years away from the ATP Tour due to prolonged injuries to his knee, foot, and wrist, limiting his activity. He played just one official match in June 2023 at the Stuttgart Open.

His long-awaited return came last week at the Brisbane International, where he displayed a competitive performance against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard but was defeated in a third-set tie-break. Nevertheless, Kyrgios left a promising impression ahead of the year’s first Grand Slam.

Kyrgios faces backlash for targeting Cruz Hewitt’s session with Sinner

During preparations for the Australian Open, Cruz Hewitt (the son of former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt) trained with Jannik Sinner and shared an Instagram post after their session. Kyrgios seized the opportunity to comment on the post, indirectly taking aim at Sinner: “Love ya Cruz but this is wild,” he wrote.

Rennae Stubbs recently addressed Kyrgios’ latest episode involving the 16-year-old rising Australian star on her podcast. “Going after Cruz Hewitt for hitting with the world number one, who is coached by the same person who coached his dad, Lleyton Hewitt.”

Stubbs explained the deep connection between Cahill and Hewitt. “Darren Cahill was essentially one of the biggest and most important people in Lleyton Hewitt’s early life as a tennis player, helping him get to number one, so they have a special relationship. They are both from Adelaide. They clearly have a unique and special relationship.”

“Cruz Hewitt has a qualifying wild card into the Australian Open. What better preparation than to practice with the defending champion, who can teach him invaluable lessons on how to improve on the court? Why wouldn’t you hit with him?”

“Clearly Darren said does Cruz want to hit with Jannik on Centre Court. Of course, Lleyton is going to say yes to that. That is an opportunity any kid would want,” Rennae Stubbs added. “To give the guy s*** on social media and go after him is not a joke. If you want to joke, you call his Dad or call him, because I’m pretty sure you have either of their numbers. You don’t give him shit on a public forum, that’s embarrassing to him. He just doesn’t know how to stop and learn to be an adult in these situations.”
