Nick Kyrgios is in doubt to return to his home turf at the Australian Open in the next week. He has suffered a grade one abdominal strain after his return to the court at the Brisbane International last week.

His exhibition match with Novak Djokovic is off which formed part of the Fan Week before the tournament and he is facing a race against time to make it.

After nearly two years away from the sport, he lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard last week in Brisbane but gave a number of worrying injury updates during the tournament albeit more on his wrist than anything else. But after spending many years with hopes from Tennis Australia that he will play, they potentially face another year without their box office home attraction.

"Unfortunately won't be able to play my good friend Novak Djokovic this Thursday on the 9th as I've had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a grade one strain. Will be resting and doing everything I can to be ok by the Australian Open," wrote Kyrgios on Instagram.

He also gave an unwanted update last week albeit on his wrist not his abdominal. "I was really excited for the Aus Open, but after today... obviously I'm [still] super excited. If I'm able to play, I'm able to play. But the reality kind of set in to me," Kyrgios said after his loss to Mpetshi Perricard.

"(Brisbane International is) a best-of-three [sets] match with my wrist. Not only is a grand slam mentally really draining, like you're there for two-and-a-half, three weeks [but] it's, like, physically a grind.

"It's one of the hardest things to do in any sport, is win a grand slam in men's tennis.

"I think I almost need a miracle, and I need the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a grand slam, for sure.

"Today, if this was a grand slam, we may still be out on court, and I don't know how I'd pull up the next day or the day after."
