America’s tennis star
Tommy Paul has opened up about the positive
role of his coaching staff which helped him in his career taking a massive U-Turn
after some disappointing seasons. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the
best American players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category.
Even though Paul has delivered some notable performances in
the recent past, his career was in a difficult territory, in particular in 2020
and 2021, where he collectively won just 37 out of the 73 matches, suffering
nearly as many defeats in the process. Since then, however, things have
drastically improved. Last year, Paul won 45 matches out of 64 and finished
with a win percentage of 70. He ended up winning three titles as well.
The New Jersey-born has recently spoken in a Nothing Major podcast
where he talked about the role of his coaching staff in going through a
difficult phase of his career. Paul, who recently participated in the Dallas
Open and was knocked out after losing in the semifinal to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov,
heaped praise on his coaching staff for getting his career back on track.
"[Brad Stine]
He's done a lot for me, he was like the best hire I have ever made and we all
know him really well," he said. "The guy can talk but he's a pretty
good coach. He got me out of a hole. "It's not just him, I had a bunch of
really good people around me that I was lucky to have. The team that I have
right now, my trainer Franco [Herrero], my physio, they've all been with me for
years now. I don't think that just one person can get you out of a hole. Your
whole team is so important, especially with the amount that we travel, you guys
know how it is. It's lonely on the road. And especially when you're playing
s**t, you don't wanna be there anymore. Having the people around you to keep
you motivated in times like that is huge."
