Italy’s young tennis star
Jannik Sinner believes that Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic was rightly penalized in the semifinal of the
Wimbledon 2023.
The 36-year-old was fined with a penalty by the chair umpire
for a prolonged grunt during the last-four clash in the third Grand Slam of the
year on Friday.
Talking about that after the match, Sinner was of the opinion
that Djokovic was rightly penalised as he was aware of his actions.
“Yeah, it's a call of the umpire, no?,” he said. “Obviously,
he hit the ball already, and then after he was shouting quite long and with the
volume up.”
Despite that call, the current world number two proved too
strong for his young opponent and ended up securing a thumping win in straight
sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to book his place in the final of the
competition.
With that result, the 23-time Grand Slam winner is now just
one win away from equaling former world number one and Switzerland’s tennis great
Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles in the men’s singles tennis in
the Open era.
Djokovic will now
face world number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in a mouthwatering grand finale of
Wimbledon 2023 on Sunday.
