Czech Republic’s
Marketa Vondrousova has stated that she has
no idea how she went on to win
Wimbledon 2023.
The 24-year-old defeated Tunisia’s
Ons Jabeur in the final
of the third Grand Slam of the year with a score of 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday in
London.
The victory was Vondrousova’s first-ever major title in her
professional career and while speaking about that after the match, she admitted
that tennis is indeed a ‘crazy’ sport.
"After everything I have been through, I had a cast
last time, it's amazing I can stand here and hold this,” she said. “Tennis is
crazy. I don't know how I've done it. The comebacks are not easy you never know
what to expect. I was hoping I could comeback to this level and now I am
here."
The victory was a surprising one as Vondrousova entered the
contest as an unseeded player in the women’s singles category.
Before this year, the Sokolov-born never played in the third
round or beyond at Wimbledon whereas it was only her second appearance in
quarterfinals stage or beyond in any Grand Slam event.
Vondrousova ended up winning five out of the seven matches
in straight sets including the semifinal against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and the
final against Jabeur.
She lost just two sets in the entire competition — against fellow
Czech Republic player Marie Bouzkova in the round of 16 and against America’s Jessica
Pegula in the quarterfinal.
