Many expected Ons Jabeur to be crowned the champion at 2023
Wimbledon but
Marketa Vondrousova has paid heed to that on Saturday afternoon defeating the Tunisian for a maiden Grand Slam title 6-4, 6-4.
Vondrousova lost out in the final of 2019 Roland Garros but wasn't to be denied this time prevailing in straight sets with her husband in the crowd for the first time and after spending most of last season injured, she has her reward and at the age of 24 will hope to go from strength to strength.
The Czech ace certainly did it the hard way to take the opening set coming from 2-4 down to seal it 6-4 with four consecutive games won.
This after an erratic start from Vondrousova who handed Jabeur chance after chance and she grasped it at 2-4.
But Vondrousova broke back at 4-3 hitting a break of serve to love in a match that nobody could predict. She got through the following game with relative normality making it 4-4 but Jabeur suddenly locked up with the opening set in her sights.
Vondrousova didn't do much other than a superb backhand winner which brought up break point.
Another error saw Jabeur break and make it 5-4 and she served it out from there to gain the initiative.
The tide turned and Jabeur suddenly had 15,000 people on her side as she went 3-1 up but Vondrousova broke straight back and levelled up.
Pressure started to mount and Jabeur went 4-3 up but never looked comfortable and Vondrousova broke her to go 5-4 up and was serving for the title and did so without an air of nerves barring a fault on match point as she dropped to her knees.
In the ceremony, Ons Jabeur sat there sobbing with what could've been again for the Tunisian.
