Daniil Medvedev is in the National Bank Open Toronto semifinal after a narrow win over Hubert Hurkacz 2-6 7-6(6) 7-6(5).
The match between Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz was a spectacular one that saw Medvedev advance to the semifinal. Hurkacz played some spectacular tennis on a surface that suits him extremely well. Medvedev spoke candidly after the match admitting Hurkacz could have and possibly should have won the match:
“He had his chances and he was probably the better player for at least two sets for sure, but that’s tennis. We both have great serves and I managed to hit some aces when I needed to."
Just like at Wimbledon, Medvedev struggled with Hurkacz who was serving extremely well. Once Hurkacz has his serve working he is very hard to defeat especially on hard courts of North America where he spent a lot of time practising in the past.
This time around Medvedev was able to make some adjustments in his game that allowed him to keep Hurkacz away from too many break points. He also produced aces in key moments which helped shift the balance. He said:
"It was definitely not easy. He was on top of me. But to win matches like this gives you a huge boost of confidence. It’s a pleasure to be standing here and giving interviews.”
Medvedev will face a similar player in John Isner for a place in the final. While more static than Hurkacz, Isner is also very hard to defeat when he is serving well and this week it's been a clinic. The match starts at 02:00 CET.
