Italy’s tennis star
Jannik Sinner has heaped praise on
fellow countryman
Matteo Berrettini for his positive impact in the
Davis Cup.
Italy went on the win the competition after beating
Australia in the final with a score of 2-0 on Sunday. Sinner played a key role
in helping the side secure the title as he defeated Alex de Minaur in the second
match of the tie in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-0.
Sinner, after the triumph, had some kind words for Berrettini
who was not part of the team but joined the group to motivate them ahead of the
tie.
“Huge thanks to Matteo,” said the current world number four.
“He’s had a very tough year with a lot of injuries. It means a lot to us that
he came here for all of us. He gave us a lot of positive energy. Thanks Matteo.
All the time, we kept everything together. Yesterday we were one point away
from being out. Today we get to celebrate the win. We are very, very happy.”
Earlier on Saturday, Sinner produced a masterclass as he
managed to save three match points against the current world number one Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic and won the tie.
