Serbia’s legendary tennis star
Novak Djokovic believes that his
wife will not be happy to see him play into his 50s to equal the record of the
former world number one
Rafael Nadal.
The Spaniard has an outstanding record while playing at the
Roland Garros where holds the record for most French Open titles. He has lifted
the title 14 times. Djokovic is often regarded as the greatest player in the
history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won 24 Grand Slams.
Despite that immaculate record, the 36-year-old has only won
the French Open three times. Djokovic was recently quoted in a report where he
stated that he is sure his wife would be unhappy if he were to go after Nadal’s
record while playing on the Clay court.
"I don't know, I'm sure my wife wouldn't be very happy,”
he said. “I am very satisfied with everything I have achieved. I do not have to
look at Rafa's record in Paris. I have many that I'm proud of and that are part
of history. If I were to retire right now, I could only be happy and proud of
what I've done.
"Was it realistic to think I would win three of the
four Grand Slams this year? Five years ago or even one or two years ago, I
don't think people thought that was possible. I know myself and I know that if
I feel good physically and mentally I'm capable of doing it.”
The current world number one once again ended the year as
the number one player in the world after securing the ATP Finals title in Turin
earlier this month. Djokovic defeated Italy’s young tennis star and current
world number four Jannik Sinner in the final in straight sets with a score of
6-3, 6-3.
