"He's incredibly playful": Jack Draper makes unexpected Andy Murray admission after joining his coaching team

Jack Draper is ready to begin the next chapter of his comeback, and the British star has revealed a different side of Andy Murray that fans rarely get to see. After bringing the former world No. 1 into his coaching team earlier this year, Draper explained how Murray’s personality, energy and approach away from competition have made a major impact during one of the most difficult periods of his career.
The 24-year-old will return to ATP action this week at the DC Open after accepting a wildcard into the ATP 500 event. Draper has missed all three Grand Slams in 2026 due to recurring injuries and has seen his ranking drop to world No. 147, forcing him to rebuild his season during the crucial North American hard-court swing.
Washington represents an important opportunity for the former US Open semifinalist, who is searching for rhythm and confidence ahead of the final Grand Slam of the season. A strong run at the ATP 500 event could help Draper climb back up the rankings while also improving his chances of securing a wildcard for Flushing Meadows if needed.
However, beyond the technical side of their partnership, Draper highlighted the personal qualities that have surprised him most about Murray since they started working together. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Briton described the three-time Grand Slam champion as someone who has brought calmness and positive energy to his team, while also revealing a more playful personality that was not always visible during Murray’s intense competitive years.
"He really believes in me"
Draper admitted Murray has brought a different atmosphere to his team, highlighting not only his experience but also his personality away from competition.
"Andy's been an incredible part of my team so far. He's brought a real calmness. He's got great energy about him,” Draper told Sky Sports. “I think people are seeing it more now after he's retired, but he's incredibly playful. He always has a lot of fun."
For Draper, however, the biggest contribution has been the confidence Murray has given him after months battling injuries that forced him to miss the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. "He's great because he really believes in me and my tennis and believes that I can go a long, long way in the sport."
"To have one of the biggest idols think like that is something to really be proud of and gives me confidence,” the former Indian Wells champion added. “We're on a journey together and I think there's so many improvements in my game and so much to come."
Washington represents Draper's first opportunity to build momentum before the US Open. After falling outside the world's top 100 because of injuries, the former US Open semifinalist is currently relying on a wildcard to enter ATP events and is expected to need another invitation if he wants to avoid qualifying at Flushing Meadows.
There have already been encouraging signs. Before the tournament, reports emerged that Draper dominated world No. 9 Ben Shelton 6-1 in a practice set, reinforcing the feeling that his level is gradually returning.
The former US Open semifinalist now hopes to translate those positive signs into competitive matches as he begins what could become the most important stretch of his season, with Murray guiding him through the comeback. His debut will be against Alex Michelsen and is scheduled for Tuesday.
