Five must-watch first-round clashes at the 2026 DC Open: Tsitsipas vs De Minaur, Eala vs Zheng and Venus Williams’ opener highlighted

The DC Open marks an important point of the season as the North American hard-court swing gets underway, with two Masters 1000 events ahead and the US Open as the main objective for the top names on tour. Washington is the first stop of a new swing and will be packed with stars.
For that reason, the ATP 500 and WTA 500 tournament will feature a star-studded field, and both the men’s and women’s draws bring high-level matchups from the opening round.
Wildcard Stefanos Tsitsipas received a difficult draw against first seed Alex de Minaur on the men’s side, in what will be a guaranteed matchup on the tournament’s main stadium court, with two of the biggest names in the men’s draw facing each other — especially as Tsitsipas looks to rediscover his form in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, on the women’s side, the likely blockbuster first-round clash will feature Filipino star Alexandra Eala against former Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen. Venus Williams will also look to return to winning ways when she faces Anastasia Potapova, one of the pleasant surprises of the first part of the season.
1. Alex de Minaur vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Alex de Minaur arrives after a few weeks away from the tour following his Wimbledon exit — and later marrying Katie Boulter. The Australian will look to begin his title defense in the best possible way after winning the tournament in 2025, but he will face a difficult challenge against Tsitsipas, who despite his low ranking (only world No. 55), arrives in excellent form.
The former world No. 3 lifted his first trophy in 16 months just days ago at the Swiss Open Gstaad. He currently sits just outside the top 50 in the ATP rankings, but perhaps the recent title can serve as inspiration to rediscover his best level during the final part of the season — especially after recent changes in his team that included the definitive departure of his father Apostolos Tsitsipas as his coach.
The head-to-head record is heavily dominated by the Greek, who leads 12-1, although based on current form, De Minaur enters this matchup with the advantage this time.

2. Alexandra Eala vs Zheng Qinwen
A clash between two Asian stars and important names on the WTA Tour. Alexandra Eala arrives with confidence after an impressive grass-court swing, which included her first appearance in the second week of a Grand Slam after reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon. She enters Washington at her best-ever ranking of world No. 28.
The 21-year-old is looking to continue proving on hard courts that she is an all-surface player and add more confidence in a high-impact opening-round matchup.
She was drawn against former world No. 4 Zheng Qinwen, who despite injuries preventing her from consistently performing at her best, was until recently one of the most feared names on tour.
The former Australian Open runner-up, former top-five player and Olympic gold medalist has defeated practically every top name currently competing on tour, but now needs to rebuild confidence — especially against high-level opponents. It will be a matchup between two players with excellent control from the baseline, where long rallies are almost guaranteed.

3. Jack Draper vs Alex Michelsen
The presence of Jack Draper in DC Open is one of the biggest talking points despite the fact that he is currently outside the top 150. Injuries have prevented him from competing regularly, and after an impressive run at Eastbourne that saw him reach the semifinals — his first tournament in three months — another injury quickly forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon.
It will be a complicated test for the Brit, who faces one of the local favorites in Alex Michelsen, a talented player still searching for his best form but who has already shown he has the ability to compete at the highest level inside the top 30. The conditions in DC are ideal for Michelsen, who if focused with his serve will be a very difficult challenge for Draper. It will be the first meeting between both players.

4. Venus Williams vs Anastasia Potapova
Venus Williams returns to a singles appearance after her encouraging performance at the Bad Homburg Open, where she eventually lost in a dramatic third-set tiebreak against Irina-Camelia Begu.
The 46-year-old American has shown she can still compete in singles matches, but she has not been able to secure a victory since defeating Peyton Stearns one year ago, precisely in Washington.
Perhaps the location can bring good fortune to the former world No. 1, who will face a player inspired by her performances during the last few months. That player is Austria’s Anastasia Potapova, who produced an incredible 17-5 record during the clay-court swing but struggled during the grass season with three consecutive defeats.
She will look to rediscover her form on hard courts, in a match that could depend as much on the mental side as the physical one.
Williams will not make things easy for Potapova, but the Austrian will need to handle the pressure of being the favorite on unfamiliar territory — especially after a negative streak. With confidence, she should have no problems advancing, but if complications appear, world No. 28 Potapova could suffer more than expected in her debut.

5. Arthur Fils vs Rafael Jodar
While Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz appear set to dominate the next decade, Arthur Fils and Rafael Jodar are emerging as two of the biggest hopes of their generation capable of challenging the current elite. Both players have already shown they possess the talent and potential to reach the highest level, although consistency and further development will be key to turning that promise into sustained success.
Jodar has enjoyed an incredible rise in recent months, winning 25 of his last 31 matches — including a three-set battle against Fils in the Barcelona semifinals, where the Frenchman eventually prevailed on his way to winning the title.

Fils, meanwhile, despite physical setbacks that have kept him out of important tournaments, remains one of the most exciting young players on tour and has shown increasing consistency whenever he is healthy. His Barcelona triumph highlighted the level he can reach when fully fit, while his aggressive game and athletic ability continue to make him a dangerous opponent for the top names.
This will be an opportunity for revenge for Jodar in a matchup that could potentially be repeated in the later stages of major tournaments in the coming years — if both players manage to fulfill the expectations they are already creating.
