America’s former tennis star
Andy Roddick believes Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic is by far the best athlete on the planet right now.
The 36-year-old is often termed the greatest player in
the history of men’s tennis in the Open era after winning as many as 24 Grand
Slams titles.
His 24th major title victory came recently in New
York where he defeated the current world number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev
in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to win the US Open
2023.
Roddick, who won the US Open back in 2003 which was his only
Grand Slam title in his career, was quoted in a report recently where he heaped
praise on Djokovic and called him the best athlete on the planet.
"The dominance of Novak and the way that he’s able to
win this consistently is just absurd,” he said. “He’s probably the most
reliable player that we’ve ever had in the game. I wouldn’t bet against him on
any given day, on any surface, in any format. It’s not even close to hyperbolic
to say that he’s the best athlete on earth right now.
"It’s an impossibility to make a statistical argument
against him being the best ever. It’s like proving gravity at this point. He’s
now tied Margaret Court on 24 Slams, but he wants all of the records, so he’ll
want to get to 25. After that, he’s basically playing against his own shadow — there’s
nothing else out there for him.”
There were a lot of concerns where Djokovic will be able to keep
his winning momentum going coming into 2023 but he proved all the doubters wrong
by clinching three out of the four major titles.
His only defeat in the Grand Slam this year came in the
final of the Wimbledon where he came second-best in a five-set thriller against
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
