Jakub Mensik made history at the Miami Open by becoming the first player born in 2005 to reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event. The 19-year-old defeated Arthur Fils (17th seed) 7-6, 6-1, becoming the first of his generation to make it to the final four of a tournament at this level.
Mensik will reach his career-high ranking as world No. 19 on Monday while awaiting his next opponent between Taylor Fritz (No. 4) and Matteo Berrettini (No. 30). This marks his second semifinal appearance at the tour level, with the first coming at the 2024 Qatar Open, where he finished runner-up to Karen Khachanov.
The talented player from Prostějov is the youngest Masters 1000 semifinalist in recent years, considering no player born in 2004 has reached this stage either. Previously, Carlos Alcaraz—born in 2003—was the most recent young star to advance to the final four.
The Czech's path to the Miami Open semifinals included victories over Roberto Bautista Agut, Jack Draper, and Roman Safiullin, before receiving a walkover due to his compatriot Tomas Machac's injury. He then sealed his spot by defeating 17th seed Arthur Fils.
Mensik had already made a Masters 1000 quarterfinal appearance in Shanghai but fell to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. So far, the young Czech boasts an impressive 6-5 record against top-10 players, with his latest victory coming against Draper—the recent Indian Wells champion.
