Holger Rune
suffered an early defeat against French player Arthur Cazaux (world No. 122) in
the second round of the
Australian Open. The Danish player, arriving as the 6th
seed and considered one of the favorites, experienced another setback in a
Grand Slam following his first-round exit at the previous US Open.
Boris
Becker, Holger Rune's current coach, opted not to accompany him to the AO, and
he was eventually announced as a commentator for Eurosport for the first Grand
Slam of the year. A peculiar situation unfolded when the German commented on
his player's defeat: "You gotta give credit to Cazaux, who is a very
talented young player and played a great match. It was more Arthur winning than
Rune losing."
Furthermore,
the German shared his opinion on what Rune needs to improve during the season.
According to the former world No. 1, the areas for improvement for his protégé
are his forehand and using more height and 'heavy top spin.'
Rune’s
downfall
The defeat
was a tough one for the Danish player, being the first top-10 player to be
eliminated and only the third from the top-20, joining Frances Tiafoe (No. 17)
and Nicolas Jarry (No. 18). Rune was surpassed by the 21-year-old Cazaux, who
secured the victory with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-4, 4-6, and 6-3 at the Margaret
Court Arena.
The
20-year-old youngster also displayed his frustration during the match. When he
lost the tie-break of the first set, he became embroiled in a controversy with
the chair umpire. Rune forcefully removed a microphone from the chair with a
swing of his racket and received a warning from umpire Marijana Veljovic.
Cazaux has
never entered the top 100 and this marks only his third victory in an ATP-level
match. In the third round, he will face the 28th seed Tallon Griekspoor, who
has had a commendable tournament so far with wins over Roman Safiulin and
Arthur Fils.
