Denmark’s young tennis star
Holger Rune has stated that hiring former world number one
Boris Becker was not a ‘mistake’ despite a recent minor confrontation on the social media platform. The 21-year-old is often
regarded as one of the most talented players currently playing in the men’s
tennis in the singles category.
Rune and Becker worked together for a brief period last year when the youngster was going through a rough patch. Their association ended soon after, as Becker was replaced by famous tennis coach Patrick
Mouratoglou.
Rune and Becker were involved in a minor spat on social
media after the former world number one claimed that he was not aware where the
Dane is currently working with his French coach. Rune was recently quoted in a
report stating that it was not a ‘mistake’ to hire someone of the quality
of Becker. He also suggested that his response to that comment from the German
tennis legend was largely down to the fact that he was confused about that
comment.
"No, no, no. It wasn’t a mistake at all [to hire Boris
Becker)],” he said. “We agreed to try it out, and it worked super well. I came
directly from a bad period, and he definitely helped me get back on track. I
was a bit confused about the tweet he made, but there are no hard feelings. He
was a fantastic player, one of the greatest legends in tennis. I definitely
learned something from him."
Rune recently participated in Wimbledon 2024, where he had a rather disappointing outing. He was knocked out of the competition after losing to former world number one Serbia’s legendary tennis star Novak Djokovic in the round of 16 with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. He is now set to play at the German Open, where he will face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the
round of 32 clash on Tuesday.
