It's been a very good year for talented Danish player Holger Rune who made his way from outside the top 300 to play at the Next Gen ATP Finals. Rune has played solid tennis overall even grabbing a set from Novak Djokovic at the US Open. Today he got his first win at the Next Gen ATP Finals over Cerundolo in straight sets.
From the start, it was evident that Rune had the edge over Cerundolo who rarely plays on hard courts. The Argentinian earned most of his points on clay courts and while Rune considers clay his favorite surface as well, his comfort level on hard courts is much higher. The Danish player has a very precise first serve and with it, he controlled the tempo well.
The first set was won with 4-1 with the 2nd not much different. Once again it was Rune who proved better taking it fairly easily with 4-2. Cerundolo had trouble all day with Rune who moves very well around the court and the Argentinian simply does not possess the power in his groundstrokes. He himself prefers to stand back and return the balls and on hard courts that rarely goes well.
In the 3rd set, Rune had a chance to end it but a lapse in focus allowed the Argentianin to both save break points and eventually win the 3rd with 4-1. Rune consolidated to win the match woth a 4-1 2nd set finish.
