Holger
Rune's mother confirmed that the Danish player will continue working with Boris
Becker in the 2024 season.
The World
No. 8 had a strong finish to the season after a few inconsistent months. Rune
performed well at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals. However, he struggled
to maintain that level and faced several first-round defeats in subsequent
tournaments.
The
20-year-old tennis sensation was on the verge of dropping out of the top 10 and
jeopardizing his chances of playing in the ATP Finals. As a result, he parted
ways with his former coach Patrick Mouratoglou and started working with former
World No. 1
Boris Becker. This collaboration resulted in significant
improvements, with semifinal appearances at the Swiss Indoors Open,
quarterfinals at the Paris Masters, and a participation in the ATP Finals.
Although he
faced defeats against Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, Rune played competitive
matches. He also emerged victorious against Stefanos Tsitsipas after the Greek
player retired in the third game of their match.
Anekene
Rune, the mother of the World No. 8 and his agent, confirmed that Becker will
continue working with
Holger Rune in 2024: “Boris will travel with him to
almost everything. We have a final schedule next week,” she said.
The athlete
himself recently expressed satisfaction with his season, securing a title,
reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the French Open, and earning a spot
in the Finals:
“I had a
good season. When you finish in the top eight, you can be proud of yourself,”
he told reporters in Turin on Thursday.
“I think
that I could have done some things better this year – actually, a lot of
things. That’s how it is. It’s a learning process. Next year I’m going to try
to learn from this year.”
Rune ended
his season with a loss to Jannik Sinner by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 4-6. The Danish
player fought until the end to secure a qualification but ultimately couldn't
overcome the high level of the local star.
