Alexander
Zverev defeated
Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-4, concluding his participation in the
2023
ATP Finals. The German bids farewell to the tournament with a strong
performance, securing two victories in the round-robin and earning 400 valuable
ranking points, solidifying his seventh-place position.
Zverev's
win against Rublev improved their head-to-head record to 6-3, leaving the
Russian without a victory in all three encounters at the ATP Finals. Despite
finishing third in the group, Zverev wraps up the season on a positive note,
particularly after his impressive opening victory against Alcaraz.
While both
Zverev and Rublev were eliminated from the competition, they provided a
thrilling spectacle from the first set. After 'Sascha' took an early break,
Rublev recovered in the next game, maintaining an even score until 4-4. Both
displayed resilience in their service games, but Rublev was the first to
falter, conceding a break in the ninth game, allowing Zverev to claim a 6-4
lead.
The first
part of the second set saw both players comfortably holding their service games
until 3-3. However, Rublev grew increasingly frustrated with errors and missed
opportunities. In the seventh game, Zverev secured the sole break of the set,
maintaining his advantage with a strong service game. He ultimately closed the
match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 42 minutes.
Although
Zverev didn't advance to the semifinals due to a lack of sets won against
Medvedev, he concludes the season with 55 victories, securing the seventh spot
in the world rankings. Rublev finishes the season as the world No. 5, with his
first Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo.
As a
result, the semifinals will feature the top four players in the ATP Rankings.
Carlos Alcaraz will face Novak Djokovic, and local sensation Jannik Sinner will
take on Daniil Medvedev on November 18, with the grand final scheduled for
November 19.
