Holger Rune was able to finish off a dream week in Paris by beating
Novak Djokovic 3-6 6-3 7-5 in the final to win the biggest trophy of his career.
Nobody expected Holger Rune to reach the final in Paris, let alone beat the King of Paris, Djokovic who was playing his 8th final at the event. The Serbian lost only once and it came in 2018 when Khachanov proved better in two sets and the start of this match certainly made it looks as if Djokovic would not be losing this one.
Rune was all over the place not being able to keep the ball in play and very rarely producing a stellar winner which he is famous for. His serve was also not doing the trick and Djokovic took the opening set 6-3. Rune opened the second set well applying a bit more pressure and Djokovic responded by committing some very poor choices.
Unforced errors mounted and Rune took an early break which he held for the 6-3 finish. His confidence grew in that second set and his serving improved as well. Despite that increased level, Djokovic opened the final set with an early break but allowed Rune to battle back. The Dane broke Djokovic once more late in the final set.
He faced multiple break points in that final game of the match but held to close out the match and win the trophy.
