Holger Rune is the latest big name to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games joining Hubert Hurkacz and Jannik Sinner who withdrew due to injury and tonsillitis over the past day.
Rune was set to be 11th seed and Lorenzo Musetti now takes that spot. Tallon Griekspoor now takes over as 16th seed after Arthur Fils and Alejandro Tabilo took over the last two spots earlier in the day and now it is the Dutchman who takes the final spot.
Rune had to already withdraw this week from Croatia Open Umag due to an injury on his wrist sustained in Hamburg and was having tests on his wrist which he admitted himself were not so good on the outset. But he was still set to head to Paris. Only half a day before the draw though, he has made this decision.
It also ends Caroline Wozniacki's dream of teaming with him in mixed doubles. They were one out of the draw when the Entry List was announced. But now the Dane will only play singles. While Rune's Olympic dream has been crushed after a sudden injury late on.
Perhaps a lesson not to play in the weeks leading up to a big tournament. But he will now do similar to Jannik Sinner and attempt to rest up ahead of the US hard court swing and hope his injury isn't too bad that he can't play.
"I am really sorry that I will be unable to play the Olympics. It's something I've been looking forward to playing and being a part of. I have played with pain in my wrist throughout both the clay and grass season, so I have to take the medical recommendations seriously. I will follow the Olympics from home and cheer on all the Danish athletes and I hope and believe that we can bring home many medals from Paris," Rune wrote on X.
