With the
conclusion of the 2024
Australian Open, there will be several changes in the
ATP Ranking.
Novak Djokovic will remain as the world No. 1, while Daniil
Medvedev has the chance to take the world No. 2 spot from
Carlos Alcaraz if he
wins the championship.
Rafael Nadal anticipates another significant drop of 192
places after losing the points from the second-round last year.
In the
final, the former world No. 1 Russian, Medvedev, who reached his third AO
final, will face debutant
Jannik Sinner, both having eliminated the two title
favorites. Sinner overcame 'Nole,' and Medvedev ousted Alcaraz. The Russian can
win his second Grand Slam trophy, which could propel him to the world No. 2
position, surpassing Alcaraz.
As for
Sinner, he started the tournament as the world No. 4, and even if he becomes
the champion, he will maintain that ranking. This is due to the significant
points difference that separated him from the top three players, Djokovic,
Alcaraz, and Medvedev, just a couple of weeks ago. If the Italian wins, the top
four players in the ranking will close the gap.
The
22-times Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal, who did not participate in the
Australian Open, lost the points from the previous year's second round and will
drop nearly 200 places in the ranking, settling at No. 648 starting Monday.
Other
beneficiaries include quarterfinalist Hubert Hurkacz, achieving his career-best
ranking as the world No. 8, and Adrian Mannarino also reaching a new high at
world No. 17. Other players achieving their best rankings include Sebastian
Baez (25), Tomas Etcheverry (28), Matteo Arnaldi (38), Nunbo Borges (47), and
Zhizhen Zhang (50).
