After Italy's 0-3 loss to Canada at the
Davis Cup Group stage this week, some tennis fans have come to the defense of
Jannik Sinner, following the accusation that his absence from the squad led to Italy's defeat.
Sinner announced his withdrawal from the Italian Davis Cup squad earlier this month. The World No.7 cited fatigue and recuperation, as he was coming off an intense five-set defeat to Alexander Zverev at the 2023 US Open.
Italian journalist believes Sinner is to blame, fans come to his defense
Riccardo Crivelli, a prominent journalist for the leading national daily Gazzetta dello Sport, attributed Italy's defeat to Sinner's absence while also listing out all of the occasions when he prioritized his health over national duty.
However, several tennis fans spoke out in support of Sinner, with many making their thoughts known on social media.
"An Italian parochial, shabby and shameful narrative against Jannik Sinner. Let me think to some of Edgar Allan Poe' gothic writings. Luckily, he's too smart for losing time with these professional haters. The worst of the worst of lovely (?)", wrote one fan.
"HOW IS IT HIS FAULT ITALY FLOPPED," wrote another fan.
"Thrilled to see they have zero guts to even show the names of the Italian generational talents beaten by 200th ranked Canadians," said another fan, in reference to the top-ranked duo of Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego losing their singles matches.
"It’s not his fault. I’m afraid that even if he had been there he could only change the results from 0:3 to 1:2, unless he could play two singles (which is impossible)," another fan chimed in.
