Fonseca won his first ATP title at Argentina Open
The ATP 250 Argentina Open will be played between February 9 and 15 and will open the traditional Golden Swing in South America, a stop on South American clay courts featuring three tournaments during the month of February, featuring Rio Open and Santiago Open.
An attractive stop for clay specialists and other high-profile names looking to add wins and confidence with an early surface change in the calendar. Buenos Aires has already seen several historic champions, including Spaniards Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, as well as other clay-court legends such as Juan Carlos Ferrero, Dominic Thiem, David Ferrer, Casper Ruud and Guga Kuerten.
The tournament will be led by local star Francisco Cerúndolo, the only top-20 player in the draw, who will be joined by several well-known figures, including defending champion João Fonseca (No. 33), who one year ago claimed his first professional title in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, defeating Cerúndolo precisely in the final.
Among other local representatives are Sebastián Báez (No. 34), Tomás Martín Etcheverry and Camilo Ugo Carabelli (No. 53), who will all look to return the glory to a local player.
Other standout names include Italians Luciano Darderi (No. 22), Matteo Berrettini (No. 57) and Lorenzo Sonego (No. 59), as well as Chileans and former top-20 players Alejandro Tabilo (No. 71) and Cristian Garin (No. 89). In addition, the tournament has already confirmed its first wildcard for Frenchman Gael Monfils, who opted to travel to South America in the year of his retirement, after receiving invitations in Buenos Aires and Rio.
