Andy Murray played a very good match against Hubert Hurkacz at the Western & Southern Open but he still got beat 7-6(4) 6-3.
Hubert Hurkacz continued playing extremely well on the USA hard courts where he learned to play. The Polish player has trained on these very hard courts for several years and it showed today. For Andy Murray, this defeat will be one tough to swallow as the British player had his chances.
In the first set, players traded early breaks which resulted in a tied score 3-3 after six games. After that, both played rather well especially Murray who had two set points at 5-4 in the first set. Failing to use either would cost him dearly in the tiebreak where Hurkacz won with 7-4.
The 2nd set saw a noticeable drop off by both players as neither Murray nor Hurkacz served as well as in the first set. Murray served worse and that cost him late in the set at 4-3. Not long before that Murray had a break point which Hurkacz managed to save.
Had Murray converted that the match would have possibly gone into another direction but this way Hurkacz was able to close it out with 6-3. A solid effort from Murray who had chances but ultimately failed to use them,
