Bianca Andreescu was virtually unbeatable in 2019 however she never really found her form again in 2021. A few good runs were halted by injuries and this match is a direct consequence of one such injury that derailed her rather solid tennis in Montreal. Karolina Muchova is a tricky player to defeat and today she proved why.
Early in the match, the players traded breaks of serve. After shaking off some nerves both settled in nicely and held their serve. Andreescu moved well and nothing seemed to indicate she struggled with injury. However, as the set progressed she was getting a bit slow to react.
Muchova used that to her advantage moving her around the court which yielded her the first set 6-4. It's a set that could have been won by Andreescu however the leg injury clearly had an impact. It became even more pronounced later in the match as Muchova took an early 2nd set break.
She added another before Andreescu pulled it back but the damage was already done. A solid match for Andreescu who will prioritize getting healthy for the US Open where she could be dangerous if fully healthy. For Muchova a great win and start to the event.
