It was a dream come true tournament for the 21-years-old Frenchman. Humbert defeated Ruud, Cecchinato, Shapovalov, and Isner. In the final, he took on Benoit Paire who recorded four 2-1 victories in Auckland.
The final match was very close. After Humbert wasted 3 set points in the 12th game of the first set, tie-break had to decide about the winner. Then, the younger from the French duo converted his fourth set point to win the first set 7-6.
However, keeping high-level of the service, Paire who stroke 16 aces during the match leveled the score after winning the second set 6-3. But it was again tie-break which decided in favor of Humbert. He converted, again, his 4th match point to win the third set and also his first ATP title.
After winning the first title, Humbert said: “I don’t know if I realised what I did today but I’m extremely happy about my first ATP title."
The runner-up Paire, praised his countryman and was, of course, happy for him. “It’s good for him, the first time in a final first time he won a title - he’s a good friend and honestly he’s playing very well since the beginning of the week.”
