Hubert Hurkacz continued his love affair with the Miami Open reaching the semifinals thanks to a 7-6(7) 6-3 win over Daniil Medvedev.
The first set opened with Medvedev being a bit out of rhythm which Hurkacz used to his advantage to take a 3-0 lead. After that, the Russian settled into a nice rhythm and he was able to force Hzrkacz to cover the court by going left to right with his shots. The Polish player did not react too well initially which is why Medvedev ultimately battled back to make it 5-5.
The first set was decided by the tiebreak and it was a very closely contested one with both having decent chances. We saw good play by both but the crucial moment came fairly late in the tiebreak when Hurkacz had a lot of luck to win a point giving him the lead and a set point. He would convert it to take the first 7-6(7). Medvedev did not start the 2nd set too well.
He had to save break points in order to win which he did. At 2-2, Hurkacz put a lot of pressure on Medvedev as the Polish player had 40-0 on the Russian's serve. Medvedev took it to 40-40 but eventually lost the game with the Polish player confirming the break 4-2. From there it was cruise control for Hurkacz whose serve dictated the rallies well.
He finished off the job with a 6-3 2nd set win to send himself semifinal. He played a great match overall while Medvedev was a bit loose the entire match. He did not focus as well as he can and that was highlighted by the 14 break points Hurkacz had. The loss also means Medvedev won't return to number one on the rankings next Monday.
