Alexander Zverev and Karen Khachanov had to endure very audible protests during their match at the Tokyo Olympics.
The protests have been going on for days as protesters continue to denounce the stagging of the games during a pandemic. The German was no trouble by the distraction as he ran away with the gold medal defeating Khachanov 6-3 6-1. Asked about the noise he said:
"We all heard it, it was quite loud. I am not a politician, so I am not going to say much. I think most people will be quite happy that the Olympics are going on. In these times we are living in right now, it is not only nice to have but it is necessary so people can have something to watch and cheer on."
Zverev unexpectedly won the Gold medal after a great run in Tokyo. Most analysts saw Djokovic as the clear favourite to win Gold with some dark horse candidates being Medvedev and Tsitsipas. Asked about that Zverev said:
"By all the tennis experts and ex-players, they always saw other guys being better than me. But at the end of the day I have got 16 tournament wins, four Masters 1000 wins and Olympic gold. They can say whatever they want."
Zverev was quick to fire back at reporters saying the field was a depleted one lacking some of the best players. He said:
"The only one that didn't come was Rafa, this was one of the strongest tournaments this year. I think the best players were all here."
