Botic Van de Zandschulp is enjoying his best week in tennis ever reaching the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career.
The Dutch player came through the qualifiers narrowly escaping defeated several times all the way to the 4th round where he bested Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-4 5-7 5-7 6-1. It was a monumental moment for Van De Zandschulp who enjoyed support from the crowd traditionally as an underdog. After the match he took some time to reflect on his journey saying:
“I played so many matches here, some of them I was on the brink of defeat, and for the first time in the tournament, I have won the first set. The first two I almost ended up losing the match, but I am glad I won in the end.”
Van de Zandschulp got the crowd behind his back as an underdog and that did not change until the end. The atmosphere was electric especially when Schwartzman sent the match into the 5th set. Botic said:
“The atmosphere was great. I couldn’t let you guys down. The first for me in America and it has been great. I think before the tournament nobody expected me to reach the quarter-finals here and I hope they are proud in the Netherlands.”
Indeed, the Dutch player never stepped foot on American soil before so this marks a very successful introduction for him in the country.
