Following his first foray into the coaching box, retired British tennis star Andy Murray has opened up on his experience working with longtime rival Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open.

Djokovic announced Murray would be in his coaching box for the first Grand Slam of the season, leading to several fans and pundits wondering about the nature of their working relationship. Under Murray's watchful gaze, Djokovic advanced to the semifinals in Melbourne, where he was forced to retire against Alexander Zverev after sustaining a tear in his hamstring.

Murray critical of his role during the stint in Melbourne

In an appearance on Sporting Misadventures with Chris Hoy podcast, Murray took some time to reflect on his time as Djokovic's coach.

“I did a pretty bad job of [spending] way too much time in my room just watching videos of tennis and almost over analyzing matches, over preparing a little bit,” said the three-time Grand Slam champion. “So I found myself getting quite tired and I did a better job towards the end of the tournament with that.
"I was like, look, this is too much, give yourself a break, get to the gym, go for a walk, go hit a few golf balls. It was a good experience that I learned a lot from, but I found it hard, found it demanding."

However, the former World No.1 admitted there were a few positive aspects of being a coach.

"I enjoyed the matches,” he added. “I liked sitting at the side watching matches from a different perspective, I enjoyed the analysis, and preparing and planning, the strategy and everything. I really liked that, but I also found it very demanding."

Djokovic and Murray have announced their next collaboration will be at the Indian Wells Masters event in March.
