"I didn’t come here at 100%, I couldn’t even guarantee I’d be able to play" - Joao Fonseca extremely emotional on Davis Cup return

Rising to the top of tennis is never easy, and that is what Joao Fonseca has experienced in 2026. Constant injury problems having overshadowed some brilliant results have proved costly, especially recently in North America. However, he returned to the tennis court representing his beloved Brazil in the prestigious Davis Cup and was overcome with emotion after making a winning return.

The 20-year-old has been touted by many to become one of the best players in the world and even challenge the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner right at the top of the ATP pecking order. While other young talents have enjoyed flourishing 2026 campaigns, Fonseca's has stalled as of late.

A slow start to the year consisting of injuries held him back, but a quarter-final run at Roland Garros after an incredible two-set comeback against Novak Djokovic showed his true class. Nevertheless, injuries have again proven to be a nuisance. He was forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open and later skip the US Open.

This month of wretched luck had halted him in his tracks in a stop-start campaign. He has since returned to the court in Davis Cup action as Brazil took on Switzerland.

Fonseca was first up, taking on the World No.262 Dominic Stricker. It seemed like a comfortable win on paper, but Fonseca was under the cosh early on when his opponent took a one set lead. However, Fonseca rallied and managed to produce a valiant comeback, winning the final five games as he got Brazil off to a winning start with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 scoreline.

In front of an adoring home crowd, Fonseca was completely overwhelmed and broke down in tears in extremely emotional and poignant scenes. This shows how much his country means to him, but also how happy he was to be back on a tennis court after recent rotten luck.

Consoled by his team, Fonseca composed himself to say a few words after the win. “It’s been a difficult year. I’ve suffered from a lack of confidence and some injuries," Fonseca commented after the match in statements collected by the Tenis News website.

"I didn’t come here at 100%, I couldn’t even guarantee I’d be able to play, but this moment, playing in the Davis Cup for Brazil, means a lot to me. I gave it my all and it’s a very important victory for me and for the team.”

Determined to get back to his previous powers, Fonseca was in awe of this win. “Without a doubt, this victory can give me a lot of confidence, but also a lot of maturity. Not only for the rest of the year, but for the rest of my career."

This win meant so much for him. Now a foundation to build off from, Fonseca was in the midst of Brazilian tennis royalty. Three-time Grand Slam champion and former World No.1 Gustavo Kuerten was there to watch and even exchanged a few words following the win.

“It’s an honour to play in front of you. The history you’ve made in tennis is wonderful. Thank you for inspiring us like this. The phase where you were a nuisance is over; now you only help."

That 1-0 lead over Switzerland was soon doubled. Gustavo Heide took down Stan Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 in a compelling battle. The Swiss legend will take on Fonseca next but will need to hope for a victory in the doubles before an enthralling battle between experienced and youth can take place with something on the line. The winner will advance to the 2027 World Group qualifying rounds.
