Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the
US Open on Monday after failing to recover from an injury that he recently sustained in his abdominal.
In a statement published on social media, he confirmed that he had been forced to withdraw from the last Grand Slam of 2026 due to an abdominal injury. He played at the recent Cincinnati Open but he had to withdraw against Christopher O'Connell due to the issue. He reached the third round of the Canadian Open earlier this month before losing to Ben Shelton.
According to ESPN Brazil, he returned to Rio shortly after Cincinnati to treat the pain in the left side of his abdomen. The exact details of this injury are not public and it is unsure how long he will actually be out for. He made his
US Open debut last year where he reached the second round before losing to Tomas Machac. He also won the boys title in 2023. He is currently 19-13 on the tour this season and has made it to the Quarter-Finals of three events in the Monte Carlo Masters, BMW Open and French Open.
He is the third top 30 player to pull out of the main draw which gets underway on Sunday. Jannik Sinner is the biggest while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is also out with a back problem so again it's another big name gone.
"Hi everyone. I wanted to give you all an update. After undergoing tests and starting treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover so I can compete at a high level," said Fonseca on social media.
"Unfortunately, this means I won't be able to play in the US Open. It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me. We'll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible. I'm super grateful for all the messages of support and for the birthday wishes, thank you!”
