"I feel like an idiot for thinking that I could win this thing" - Fritz after round one US Open exit

Taylor Fritz was very hopeful of his US Open chances but he lost in round one to compatriot and qualifier Brandon Holt.

Holt has ties to tennis as his mother is legendary player Tracy Austin who had a superb career. The 24-year-old qualified for the main draw for the first time this year and his first match proved a proper success. Taylor Fritz was beaten and he felt a very specific way after the loss:

”I’ve been playing really well- Had really high hopes. I feel like an idiot for thinking that I could win this thing, win the US Open. I can't go out and play a match like that. It sucks. I feel awful.”

The defeat is problematic for Fritz in many ways as he tries to earn enough points to secure the ATP Finals in Turin. He is ranked 10th currently and some good points would have helped in that regard.
