3rd seed Maria Sakkari out of US Open, beaten by Wang

Another big name is out of the US Open with Maria Sakkari got beaten by Xinyu Wang after an almost 3-hour battle 6-3 5-7 5-7.

Maria Sakkari has not been able to return to her form at the start of the year when she played superb tennis. It's been a long struggle for her and it was particularly disappointing during the clay season which is where she usually shined in years past. It's continuing on hard courts as the 3rd set is out in round two.

Sakkari opened the match well with a 3-1 lead but dropped her serve not long after to make it 3-3. Eventually, she was able to jump ahead once more to take the first one 6-3. Wang was too aggressive at times and wasn't as sharp slamming the ball wide often.

The second was a proper battle between the players as the levels were pretty close. Wang was better early but complicated things a couple of times by not closing out the set. Eventually, she got it 7-5. A huge problem for Sakkari was her serve which was not good enough and she depends on it quite a bit. She overhit in a couple of crucial rallies as well.

The final set was another good one with Sakkari jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Wang battled back to 3-3 and eventually found herself with a match point which she converted. Sakkari faltered towards the end of the match not being able to handle the pressure of the moment which is not unusual for her.
