Novak Djokovic easily defeated Denis Novak in Serbia's first Davis Cup Finals tie against Austria securing the victory for his nation.
It was a very good match from Djokovic who looked locked in from the first point and after scouting his opponent for a few games he easily bested him moving forward. A 6-3 6-2 win is a great start for Djokovic who spoke after the match saying:
"I felt great on the court today. I was focused from the first point ready to execute the match plan. I never faced Novak, it's kind of funny when you say Novak, there are not a lot of us, but we never played before."
Djokovic praised his opponent who stuck around for a while in the first set until Djokovic finally found a breakthrough:
"I knew that he has a good game, he was playing at home with a solid record in the competition. I needed some time to adjust to the speed of the match, to feel the ball better. The crucial game in the first set was the 8th one, 4-3 with new balls. I put some serves back in, made him play, mixed it up. From there it was easier, I moved well, served well. All in all a very good match."
Serbias is considered one of the favourites especially with Djokovic and asked about that he said:
"I really feel like we have a good core of players that allows us to hope we can go far. But we need to clear the group first, then the quarterfinals. Getting to Madrid is a huge success. We always aim for the highest of goals, at least me personally. There are better squads on paper but we are strong as well."
